What the hell am I doing? Elizabeth asked herself for the second time as Erik practically dragged her out of the office using the back door and down the rickety metal stairs to the parking lot. There was no doubt in her mind he’d chosen the back way so no one would see them, namely Tim Johns. Damn, damn, damn! She really needed to get Johns’s key card tonight! It would be far safer if she slipped him a mickey and lifted the card in a crowd. By the time she maneuvered him into her car, he would be out cold. Drugging him during a one‐on‐one situation would be much harder. No matter how many times the lieutenant asked, she refused to go out on a date with him. He gave off bad vibes.

She thought about objecting to being manhandled, but the truth was, she liked it. She loved the way that tic was back in Erik’s jaw. If he clenched that jaw any tighter, it might break. He strode toward his car like a man on a mission—all fierce and determined. “Sure, I can,” came the rueful reply. “I may be a jarhead, but they did teach me Navy know‐how at the Academy, Lieutenant Commander.”

Did he plan on punishing her in some way? Did he know all of it? Oh, dear Lord, what if he really was the smuggler and not Johns?

Fears and doubt warred with rational deduction as she tried to come up with a plausible excuse. But how could she when she had no idea how much he knew? A small part of her had known he would find her out. The man’s entire career was based on covert ops. But to hear him just come on out and admit he knew who she really was came as a shock.

She felt his warm breath caressing her cheek before the deep rumble of his voice murmured in her ear. “Relax, I promise not to interfere with your investigation. Much.”

What the hell was that supposed to mean?
